Choosing a criminal law firm

Five questions to ask

1. Who will actually run my file, and who will appear? Firms sometimes sell the senior name and staff the file elsewhere. Ask for the name of the person doing the work and the person who will be on their feet in court.
2. What is the fee, and what does it not cover? Get it in writing. Barrister fees, expert reports, filing fees and appeals are commonly excluded. Find that out now rather than in an invoice later.
3. How often do you appear in this court? Local knowledge of a registry, its listing practices and its prosecutors is worth real money to you.
4. What are the realistic outcomes? Anyone who guarantees a result is telling you something they cannot know. The right answer describes a range and explains what moves you within it.
5. What do you need from me, and by when? Character references, treatment records and employment letters take time to gather. A firm that tells you this at the first appointment is planning ahead.
