Gabby King

Qualifications and background

Gabrielle King, who goes by Gabby, graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Criminology and Justice and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. She was admitted as a solicitor in February 2022.

For two years before her admission she worked with a well regarded criminal defence barrister. That is an unusually good apprenticeship for a defence lawyer, because it is where you learn how a brief is actually taken apart rather than how it is described in a textbook.

At university she took part in the Griffith University Innocence Project, working on cases involving people who maintained their innocence. The habit that comes out of that work is a willingness to go back through a police brief looking for what is missing rather than accepting the narrative it presents.

What she acts in

Gabby has appeared as an advocate throughout the South East Queensland Magistrates Courts, District Courts and Supreme Courts. Her matters have included:

• Mental health applications.
• Assault charges.
• Drug possession and drug supply charges.
• Sexual assault charges.
• Traffic offences.

She is careful about the human side of a matter as well as the legal one. Being charged is a stressful process in itself, quite apart from the outcome, and a good deal of what a defence solicitor does is reduce the number of things a client has to worry about at once.
